Frankly, I think it amusing that so many people find this book boring. First of all, Crane was not a romantic writer; and the entire story was written tongue-in-cheek. It is first and foremost a biting criticism of war, though it combined with the naturalist philosophies of the author to create a sense of insignificance of human conflict when set against the eternal scope of an uncaring universe. In fact, it is sometimes overanalyzed to the point that students lose interest in it. Stephen Crane was a gifted writer, and his use of repetition is there to emphasize the premises of the Novel.
