I respectfully disagree with all those who say that the characters were flat, one-dimensional and uninteresting. I saw a lot of personality come through with every one of them, through his/her appearance, demeanor, circumstances, etc. Brian de Bois-Guilbert was no hero to me, rather a villianous sort with conflicting feelings. I interpreted his demise as due to apoplexy (recall that he is flushed with fury at Ivanhoe's reminding him of his previous two defeats in combat). I liked all the characters for different reasons, but I mainly felt that they are more complex than some people here give them credit for. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in classic literature. Sorry, but in my humble opinion, it beats the pants off anything Shakespeare wrote (always thought Shakespeare has been a bit over-rated, anyway).
