I never realised the degree of sophistication that existed in Homer's work. The Odyssey is a complex and layered story with literary devices befitting a modern writer. It certainly surpasses the Iliad as a literary work.Initially I had some difficulty in getting my head around Greek culture (especially their lax attitude to incestuous marriage between gods and the nobility but if there is a grain of truth in these tales- I imagine thats why they are not around anymore). One aspect of Odysseus' character, his metis or cunning, seems to trouble people.Personally I found this charming but there is a long standing respect for cunning in Irish mythology.
