Reply to smon. The play is not flawed. you assume that you know how a play should be structured. Modern popular culture has accustomed you to happy endings where motivation is self-evident. Sh captures the complexity of life where everyone is flawed, where sexual energy expresses itself one way or another, sometimes in religious fervour. Isabella is silent at the end because she has been shown the complexity of life, the hypocrisy of Angelo, the deceit of the Duke, the injustice of the prison system. Her innocence has been educated. Sh lets us wonder about just how much she has learned about her own passions and her own sel-deception.
