WAS or WERE?

I want to write:

“I had the clear impression that friends was all we would ever be.”

But Word’s grammar check says it must be WERE not WAS ???

“I had the clear impression that friends were all we would ever be.”

I am pretty sure that I am in the wrong here?

Friends is plural therefore it should be 'were'

I was but we were ..
