the problem with shakespeare lies not in what he wrote but how that is interpreted. this play has been subject to incredibly patriarchal interpretations that perpetuate the notion that strong women are "shrews", "scolds" etc. kate is simply a free thinker whose spirit is broken in the end. petruchio finally makes her conform to his patriarchal values and the very fact that she changes in a sense, whether is a pragmatic decision or not shows that she cannot live her life the way she wants to. kate should not be in a situation where she needs to change to be able to fit into her new life.
