Your teacher has probably provided a list of selected works of Dr. Johnson. I would suggest reading those selections, especially now that you've read and typed out the question at hand--this will give you a perspective through which to read the work, thus making the answer easier to attain.

This is a stupidly reductive question, but you need to read "The Vanity of Human Wishes" and Rasselas to get an idea of what your teacher is looking for.
