I was wondering if anyone knew if Dickens revised his novels (after their serial publication) or whether he just left them as they were. I know that he wrote Hard Times 30 pages at a time, striving to meet his weekly deadline. The reason that I'm wondering about this, is because the book has some contrived parts and plot turns, as well as certain forced character entrances (or so it seems to me). Ultimately, I find the weird discrepancy of his two-dimensional characters and the supposedly stark and "real" tone of his settings (Coketown REALLY is like the industrial towns of Northern England) to be hard to reconcile. There's a mixed message here and it's confusing.
