I read this book in under 2 hours, I love the way Dickens parodies social trends by taking characters to their extremes. In some ways this is a very simple moral tale about the degradation brought about by the new industrialised society without the paternalistic benevolence previously inherent from the aristocracy. Gragrind can be said to contradict this trend although in the end his charactor is 'redeemed.' Good strong Dickensian propaganda.
