I dont understand moby dick at all

Why did people make such a big deal out of this book? I have always wondered why it was such a hit i mean i agree Melville is an excellent writer but what is so interesting about a whale that is killing people?

We all have a white headed whale inside us that could be what ever you have inside your head which makes you afraid.
That is what Herman is talking about when he describes different kind of whales.
