The essay at the top failed to really go into QueeQueg, who was the 'best' character in the book, not to mention the most civilized. I surely can't be the only one who picked up on the prejudice theme, can I? The fact that the tattooed cannibal selling shrunken heads is the greatest man in the book, and really the most civilized kinda screams at the reader. While the jerks tend to be white Christians. It also brought up fate versus free will. While the heavy Biblical references made me want to gag, I really do like this novel. And despite what some think, it really is the first 'American' novel.
