Melville's grand take on the subject matter and his belief in literature and the reader is staggering. To me, it is in his digressions that Melville transcends the common-place and turns his novel into 'The Bible of Adventure'. In the infancy of modern times, he found a language to recharge - nay, I tell thee, supercharge! - mythological perceptions about man, animal, killing and destiny, and send the whole fabulous package down the road to the future.
