A captivating read !!!! Slow at first , i agree!! I had to leave the book down after reading the first 2 pages of the Custom House, because i hadn't the faintest idea what i just read . However , forced into writing an essay on it , i picked it up again with good intentions and soon found myself entwined in the moral message to be evoked . Its a hauntingly realistic depiction of puritan attitudes while at the same time showing that anything can be overcome if you stick to your beliefs . Hester Prynne is represented as a tower of strength in contrast to the cowardly male figure of Dimmesdale . I greatly admire Hawthorne for depicting this strength of the female figure as i know it greatly contradicts the values of his time .
