In all the years since The Scarlet Letter came out it has never gone out of print. The book is slow but the it does provoke thought on various topics and levels. Current fiction is something that entertains but Hawthorne wrote at a time when entertainment wasn't the sole purpose of a book. Aside from the symbolism and metphors, one can say that he's writing a social satire. One should never just read the words.

I was required to The Scarlet Letter, probably like all people who have ever read this book. I feel that this book is really slow and often a little boring to read. There is way to much symbolism, metaphores, themes, ect... Just a warning to anyone who read this book: You might be in for a long bore. (If I ever become a doctor and need to put a patient to sleep, I would prescribe this book to them!)
