View Full Version : Alliteration Alphabet Challenge

OK!

Here's the criteria:
Use the next letter in succession as described by the alphabet, and create an alliterative passage consisting of 3 lines or more, using ONLY that letter to begin each word, hyphens are allowed (sea-like, pre-existent), but no joining words unless it matches the letter you are using for your alliteration of course (and, is, was).

Let's see if we can manage to create the whole alphabet. Kudos to anyone who takes on X,Y and Z.

A

Alliterations aren't always annoying, although, avoiding all awkwardness after an alliteration almost always appals. Advice: accept awkwardness as an advertisement, as an amplified aptitude among art amateurs.
Ambiguously askew alliterations attract attention and almost always ascend, arriving at an accusation. Absurd acquisitions about artistic authenticity amount again...
Anyhow, about art..
Abstracts attract another artistic avenue and allure artistically-avid adults. Acquiring artwork anticipates an announcement aligning an avid amateur as an absolute, an Adonis (as analogously abroad as art-speak allows), acceptance and assurance, almost as alleviating as an applause!
Actually, anyone as asinine as above, and aims at admiration among attendees at an Art affair aggravates anyone's arsenal. Alas (an Artesian accent), another anonymous assassination around Abstract artwork achieves an amazingly appropriate applause.
After all, accidents are accidents. An anxious announcement awkwardly absconds all alive and able artistic attendants, 'AUREVOIRE!!'

Cheers!

By the way, if anyone is worried about writing one only to find someone else was also writing one at the same time, and they post it before you (or simultaneously) wasting your time and effort; just post a reply with the letter you are working on to 'book it' as pending beforehand. Then when you are done edit your post, pasting your alliteration from notepad (or whatever text editor you prefer).

:)

I have a Q passage in mind so I hope we get that far!

Farmer's favourite fowls face fate. Flapping furiously, fifteen form feeble flocks fleeing fruitlessly for freedom.
Foolishly five fly forward. Feathers fall, feet fly, fillets flip, farm-hands fetch fasteners for filling.
Foreman Frank feels fifty-five, face flustering, forgetful features forming full faced frowns.
Friday's focus finally finds face. Fortunately farm-hand's fever fizzles - falling forty Fahrenheit.
Fumbling feet flick feathers feeling for footing. Fuzziness fades.
Feet following feet flaunt facetiously, feigning fatal furnace falls for fun (frivolously foolhardy).
Far from furious furnace flames, Frank finds five frost-free fridges fit for filing freshly farmed fast food fillets.
Finito!

Well done everyone, by the way, who managed to write alliterative verses both syllabic and rhyming.

Cleverly calculated, conquering constraints,
coffee cup created, cost cutting complaints.

Just a thought.. Is alliteration on its own enough to determine a passage as poetic?
(Because that's how I approached this)

I do understand alliteration occurring in poetry but in the case where other structural rules are applied, it only seems to be alliterative occasionally.
I can imagine many variations though.

In defense of my potential ineptitude, I did call them 'passages' in the original post :p

YesNo

It is amazing how long you can keep the technique going. I was trying to make the one I wrote rhyme and have some meter as well.

Here is a link to Paul Deane's site on alliterative meter such as was used in Beowulf.

http://alliteration.net/fieldgd.htm

This is somewhat different from the alliteration used in meters that have a regular repetition of accented and unaccented syllables.

Whoa, that is extremely broad, and very much phonetically oriented.

Luckily I added rules to this 'Alliteration Alphabet Challenge' thread, but more accurately it would be called 'Alliteration-like but restricted and slightly more annoying Alphabet Challenge'.

I wrote one a few days ago which was much looser and and non-restrictive which rolls together so much nicer. I still wonder if alliteration was just an observed occurrence, and does so because words sound much nicer when they alliterate similarly - rather than alliteration being intentionally implemented. With no knowledge of alliteration, people would tend to write alliteratively (sparingly) so readers enjoy the ride(?)

Greater-goodness ghoulishly groans, 'g r a s s i u s'. Generally gentlemanly, Gunter's Graveyard greets guests, gesturing goodwill.
Ghosts give goodbyes, greetings, goodnights...gratitude goes-round, given-out gracefully.
Geists granting glimpses give gaunt gestures ghoulishly. Grim-Reaper goes galloping, greivous gallantry glares grimacingly.
Golems grin great glowing greenish grandeur. Gushing geiser's grumble gives-in; Graveyard Grand-Tour.

Guinevere graces God's glistening gardens. Glass-like garb glitters, glowing gowns gleam Godesses greatness. Galaxies give-way.
Guinevere's garments glorify Galactica's greatest gift: gems generously glimmering geomantic genius.
Gallant gesture, girl. Gallant...
Gatherers group, giggling. Grovelling gentlemen gasp, 'Greetings, Great Goddess...'

Grounded gemstones germinate golden grapes gloating gob-stopping girth...
God's giving generates generations generating generations...guess-work goes-on, geometric guidelines guide growth.
Gatekeeper Gharagorne grittingly grinds gears, granting Ghangis' guards gateway.
Ghost-land Gargoyles growl. Ghastly gazes grip goers-by. Gutless-wonders get goosebumps.

Gerbera's gentle glow... grains gently grow, generously gorgeous gails groom God's greatest garden-show.
Grape-vineyard's gallow-born geese greet galloping gusts gliding, going-with.
Glancing guides gliding geese-groups, generally gauging graze-worthy grasslands (green/greener/greenest)
Ghostly ghouls give going guests goodbye groans. Graveyard grand-finale...'G o o d b y e, g o o d m e n. G o o d l u c k'

Thanks, slipee! These are entertaining. I'm amazed how long the one's you write are. I'm lucky to get 4 short lines worth.

Now waiting for someone to write H.

slipee
05-21-2012, 09:24 AM
Oh mine are only long if they aren't structured like a poem, but more like a short story.
Keeping it in rhyme and syllabic as well is a lot harder, 4 lines are about all I can do like that with some sort of quality and consistency. The longer ones I have done don't quite fit, although the D one I did was a fluke I think. Some letters are easier, too. I didn't even attempt it until i read yours covering all grounds, and Cacian as well.

That last one I worked on for a long time, I'd occasionally read it and make adjustments. But it's not a poem really... and there are a lot of hyphens. I like doing it is why I put in the effort. I fear writer's block if I don't have boundaries.

You will notice I will probably only appear in this sub-forum because there are criteria to remain within the boundaries of, to which I enjoy pushing the boundaries. In a completely open playing field I just have no ..... direction? Without rules to push I stand still!

YesNo
05-22-2012, 05:06 PM
I like the rules as well. My main problem is having some coherent message.

Here's one for H. I'm not sure what it means.

Humongous high hilarity
Healed heartbroken Hildebrand.

slipee
05-25-2012, 01:40 PM
It sounds to me like Hildebrand looked at the brighter side of life or some ironic humour in her misfortune which had left her with a broken heart. And that she is a creator or course, a quirky one, hilariously unorthodox most probably.
