to enjoy this book at its best GET SOMEONE TO READ IT ALOUD TO YOU.(doing all the accents.) preferably at night. with the lights low. better than any film. pure adventure. it was written in the golden age of storytelling. this was the television of the time.

my father read it to me when i was seven. the language was so rich and evocative (didn't know what half the words meant but it didn't matter)and it scared me to death. its all about atmosphere and suggestion rather than visceral, rational reality. i'm still in love with it today. top yarn spinning.

it was the first book i came across where the delineation between the 'good' and 'bad' guys was blurred.

stevenson was a man ravaged by tb who was born in scotland and wound up on a pacific island. so he walked his talk. if this book doesn't arouse the adventurous independent spirit in you, i despair for you.
