This book was thoroughly engaging. The characters amuse, delight, disgust, infuriate - provoke the whole gamut of human emotions, while teaching us a great deal about human nature, relationships and morality. I feel sorry for those who find it boring, for they are missing out on one of the great treasures of English literature. My teenage daughter and niece are enchanted by it. If you don't "get it," try watching the video (1996 version by A&e) - it may change your mind completely.
