What's the name of that book?

I am searching for a book I read a long time ago, probably middle schoolish. It was about a bridge that went across this deep gorge and was traveled by many people everyday. Nearby lived a priest. The bridge broke one day and all the people on it died. The priest studied each of the dead persons lives to discover why it was these specific people who were coosen by providence to die on the bridge that day. For some unknown reason the book popped in my head about a week ago, and I was thinking of re-reading it, but I can't remember the title or author. Any help would be appreciated!
