Many people seem to sleep through the first stages of this novel, myself included. On taking it up a second time though, I found I could appreciate it more for what it is-an extremely engaging text, if you have the courage to pass through the first stage. I do think that you need to be of a certain maturity to comprehend the more subtle weavings of the novel, and as for using it as a school text to analyse to death, only a philistine would think of such a thing. You can however, work with it, and in doing so become more kindly disposed to it. A great novel if you are able to get your head round it.
