Studying English Literature at Glasgow University, Great Expectations wis one of the prescribed texts (and a novel which i am currently attempting to write an essay on). I do not understand how the first half of a novel can move over such a large period of time, briefly describing events to then turn on itself and present merely a few years of life in the same number of pages. The story becomes monotnous, and is almost as dire as the critically acclaimed 'Emma' by Austen (OK Magazine of it's time...gossip, gossip, gossip &c.) If you wish to read a classic with any depth, character and interest, try Bronte's 'Jane Eyre', and actually look forward to sitting down with the text!
