Aeneas is seen as a hero to Romans because he portrays those values that Romans upheld. It doesn't make sense to weigh him by our standards of heroes. Aeneas said that he wished he had died in battle because that is seen a an honorable death as opposed to old age. Also, it's not that he didn't care about anybody or for his own glory, it's just that he had to follow the wishes of the gods.
