Arguably, the best production was the 1978 BBC version with Louis Jourdan. Many others have been of a high quality but none of them came as close to the author's novel.

I have read the book as part of an english project and feel for its age its campares to some modern novels, and would cirtainly rivil lord of the rings if it was made into a full length acted movie.

Response: It has been made into a movie, not too long ago. It starred Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins (that I remember). It was pretty good too -- excellent visuals. Also I wouldn't call JRR Tolkein modern, he did write well over 50 years ago.
