View Full Version : Contador out of Juice?

After the first two days in the Pyrenees, the Tour is beginning to take shape. Two time defending champ Alberto Contador (who still faces his drug hearing in a month) looks more vulnerable than he has in the past. He lost some time due to a crash early, then in the team time trial – and then he lost more time in the climb up Luz Ardiden yesterday. He looked weaker than the Schlecks, Evans, or Basso. Voekler leads – but nobody expects that to last (the lead will probably disappear tomorrow, with a mountain top finish). Today Thor Hushovd broke away and won the mountainous stage inot Lourdes (miracles do happen), but with a long, downhill finish, the favorites bided their time. Tomorrow should be a big stage – and the Alps, which are the biggest stages of all this year, loom in one week.

Contador is only 4 minutes back: 2:11 behind Frank Schleck, who is first among the contenders. So he’s probably still the favorite. However, he hasn’t looked dominant so far, compared to the tours he’s won. Cavendish has won three stages and is wearing the Green Jersey. As usual, he's the top sprinter (whether he stays in Green of not).
