This is without a doubt, the most perfectly formed novel I have ever read. Believe me, as an English Lit grad student, I have read quite a few! I have read it at least half a dozen times, and it never fails to move me, from the ominous opening, to the stomach churning brutality of the martian attack to the... well you'll have to just wait and see wont you? Admitedly, there isn't much here for female readers to relate to ( the narative viewpoint and almost all of the characters are male ) which is a shame, but for a nineteenth century text, it is hugely prophetic on a wide range of issues.

The opening is possibly the greatest introduction to a novel I have ever read. Read it, just don't expect hollywood bollocks, just some good old fashioned human spirit type stuff. fantastic!
