A league is an old, almost archaic, measurement unit of length. It is three miles...nautical miles at that.

So 20,000 leagues under the sea refers to the length of their journey...approximately 60,000 miles. Hard to travel 60,000 miles on a planet that has a circumference of a little under 25,000...but they went back and forth some, so cut the author a little slack here.

Never make the mistake that the 20,000 leagues refers to depth instead of the length of the journey. The ocean just isn't that deep.
