Great book, terrible translation. The fact that it is updated is forgiveable, considering the audience. The censorship, however, is certainly not forgiveable. Extracting the vulgarity from Chaucer changes the entire tone of the work, and it does not change it for the better. Translating the middle english "swived" as "enjoyed" is simply unacceptable; there is at best only a tangential relationship between the two words. Chaucer's base humour was not of the "wink-nudge" innuendo sort, rather it was pure vulgarity. Attempts to clean up Chaucer's language serve only to pull the text away from its roots and inhibit an actual understanding of what the author had in mind.
