When I come home the house is alive, it thrives
with children, the dog, the laundry pile
that beckons with a crusted socked finger

and the stovetop that sizzles, spits,
as the smoke alarm waits with good-natured eagerness
for the muffins to burn

"Mama, Mama, Mama," the children chant
but this moment is yours, ours.
Ignoring the spaghetti sauce strolling down your shirt
I give in to your arms, and you wrap around me
warm and solid and thump thump thump:
I've come home.

There could hardly be a better choice than that "thump, thump, thump" to convey what you intend at this point! It's such a lovely, unaffected poem. I do have a wee quibble: since we're presented with such a minute by minute account of these events, when did the sauce get on to hubby's shirt?

LOL! I can empathise with the chaos of homecoming. Well done.

The thump, thump, thump was also evocative for me of Pooh Bear...and that is always in a good thing--even when it's a completely unrelated context

@Prince: the husband is cooking, and when he cooks, ingredients end up EVERYWHERE! But who am I to complain of mess when I have a hot meal placed in front of me? :)

I thought this was nice: "the smoke alarm waits with good-natured eagerness"

that beckons with a crusted socked finger

this without doubt is my favourite line. You parallel drab domesticity with security so well EA!

By "hot meal" I assume you were speaking of the pasta & tomato sauce?

Home is in the loving arms of a beloved... it's the most beautiful love poem I've read in a long while, ea! Thanks for its simplicity, energy and wonderful picture!
Best to you, Bar
