They say that those who walk in the middle of the road are bound to get run over. I assume this is the state of Rodya's mind as he tries to deal with the moral aspect of his actions. The question still remains for me: is there a universal standard of morals which our souls must adhere to? one that cannot be negotiated with? or is it society and acculturation who decides? ... I'm glad so many people can recognize the brilliance of this piece of literature but I'd be greatful if someone would point out specific examples so a novice like me can appreciate it even more.
