I'm just interested in the different styles of music people are into.
Name your favourite band, and one of your favourite songs by them.

I'm torn, between Led Zeppelin and The Living End as my favourite.
LZ song: Celebration Day
LE song: Wake Up

I've never really been a huge Coldplay fan, but I do think they are incredible musicians.

I'm terrible at choosing a "favourite" anything.

Although, I always go back to David Bowie. A favourite song is harder to pick, something along the lines of Ziggy Stardust, John I'm Only Dancing, or Velvet Goldmine.

Bowie is amazing, such a character!

I've got the biggest soft spot for classic rock and in general, a lot of music from 60s and 70s.

I think my favourite comes down to Radiohead or the Tragically Hip really depending on my mood that day.

alt rock, lyrics based normally on literature or Canadian history here is one of there more popular songs, though I am more into listening to their lesser known songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbIZ1IuqCzU&a=mhRsdSh_ioo&playnext_from=ML

I love the Hip, see them live whenever they're in the area, Gordie is great on stage.

Edit: Fully Completely is probably one of my favourite albums: Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Wheat kings, Hundreth Meridian, and the title track make it a really solid album.

I wouldn't say that it's my all time favourite but it is a real band.

My favourite album would have to be In Violet Light, I just can never get enough of the songs, Leave, A Beautiful Thing, Thrown off Glass, Dire Wolf, or the Dark Canuck. Kind of obsessed with the whole CD.

My favorite band is Green Day, my favorite song by them is incredibly hard to choose. I'ma go with 'Jesus of Suburbia' at the moment.

Ah Green Day, I've always been a fan. :)
I found an old Led Zepp shirt I thought I'd lost.
I have 4 of them now, and a Jimmy Page 'Zoso' shirt.
Haha, getting a bit hectic really.

I don't think that Bob Dylan, my favorite artist in general, counts, being that he's not a band. As such, I'm gonna have to go with the Rolling Stones. They have pretty much everything that I look for in a band; strong lyrics, rebellious attitude, and a nice energy. They're really the pinnacle of rock 'n roll.

My favorite songs are Sympathy for the Devil, Shine A Light, Wild Horses, and Gimme Shelter.

"Back in the day" it would have been "The Who"

The Who – Heinz Baked Beans (What’s for Tea?):

or perhaps "Kraftwerk":

Today, it could very well be Artie Shaw:

I'm a big fan of Ryanhood (http://www.ryanhood.com) - they're an indie acoustic rock duo. Very cool guys, great music - I met them when a friend of mine introduced us (one of the guys in his band is his brother). Definitely worth a peek if you're into acoustic guitar.

go to see before that word was highjacked.

definitely torn between Darkness by Disturbed, and Your Decision by Alice in Chains. They are both different from what they normally play which is more of a hard rock.

My all-time favorite band is the Smiths; I've listened to them so much that I know every lyric to almost all of their songs. My second favorite band right now (it changes a lot) is the Beach Boys, and Pet Sounds is my favorite album (I think I've mentioned that before...).

Bands that are also cool: The Drums, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Kinks, The Who, The Clash, The Animals, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Led Zepplin, At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, 3rd Bass, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang, Minor Threat, Cobra Lung, The Beatles... I could go on all day. :p

I love Velvet Underground (don't let Mark or Six hear this as they would give us 101 reasons why they are over-rated :svengo:)

I would say artist instead of band, and that one is Buckethead.

Just a few artist can accomplish in terms of skill and emotion what a man with a white plain mask can.

And if you think he can only shredd and his tunes have a lack of lyrics and are not emotional enough you might as well pick an album like "Population Override", "Electric Tears" or "Shadows between the sky" to change your mind and know he's not only famous because of his lightning fast hands.

I think he is the only artist Ive seen playing so many different things from album to album. "Soothsayer", "Watching the boats with my dad" and "Jordan" are all from the same person!?!?... yes they are...

I'd go for Jethro Tull every time. Seen them live several times, and they never fail to surprise. And yes, I kow that makes me old, but....

Im afraid i dont listen to much music nowdays. I like some piano pieces, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jjLMm7C2EY
And of course some by the classical composers, such as Grieg and Prokofiev.

As for pop music, although i used to play lead guitar, it just doesnt mean anything to me anymore :)

The Who has always been one of my favorites as well, though I haven't listened to much lately.

For the past couple of years, I have been writing a book which has among its characters a pop group called the Mashed Potatoes and they have a success with number called Don't Bug Me Baby; a title I dreamed up.
Today, I thought I would Google it to see what came up and, would you believe it? There really is such a title. Is this a case of life imitating, for want of a better word, art? Anyhow, here is the video and don't you just love the eloquent rendition and crystal clear diction?

Another fantastic band, if three men can be called a band, were Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Much as I love classical music, their version of Pictures at an Exhibition is pretty wll up there with the rest.

I was a huge fan of ELP too! I saw them live in Toronto on their Works 1 tour. Amazing show. I read Keith Emerson's autobiography as well - pretty good for stories about being in bands and so on, but I wish he'd written more about the music itself. But there was plenty of drama in the relationship between him and Greg Lake.

I wonder what Mussorgsky or Ravel would have thought of it.

Bemused, I suspect. They may have approved of the keyboards and percussion, but the feedback may well have left them in a daze. Mind you, if history speaks the truth, Mussorgsky would have been too smashed to notice!! The strings section would probably have sounded much like Keith Emerson going mad!! Maurice would have sat there with a mouth like a dog's bum!

Bands I like would include The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc, though I mostly listen to classical stuff nowadays and pretty much well addicted to opera, especially Mozart! (though Bach is never far away).

Yesterday I did find myself listening to this a few times:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqzZUJN-jfI&feature=related

The Neely just oozes coolness...:coolgleamA:

When I was a wee, wee boy at school I used to follow my local band Def Leppard, bad hair and all, not so cool.:frown2:

Edit: I meant the band had bad hair, not me.

Edit 2: I keep playing Little Wing now, over and over again, it is a wonderful little thing.

Outside of classical music... and jazz... which is certainly the American classical music:smilewinkgrin::patriot:... the music I have been exploring most is that of the pioneers of American music... especially in the blues and R & B:

John Lee Hooker:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veam26T9WR4&feature=related

Howlin' Wolf:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN2GE_SWRcY

Muddy Waters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4t2AVTtPSQ&feature=related

B.B. King:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYxPz7KpdG8&feature=related

These guys were the musical Gods to the Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Clapton, etc... (You oughta love 'em, Virgil!)

And then there was a music that was just as ecstatic... yet from an entirely different perspective:
