I don't exactly have that much of an ear for contemporary music (well, besides the music Toni and Rimbaud link me :p), but I do have a passion for either ambient or post-rock bands. Well Explosions in the Sky is the greatest of the latter type. The music they create is some of the most emotionally intelligent music I've ever heard from the past 40 or so years in the history of music. Now take that with a grain of salt as the most contemporary bands I listen to are Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. But still, they are undeniably one of the most mature, distinct and ingenius bands active today.

Glorious band. Hoping they might show up for a show I'm hoping to go to this summer. How Strange, Innocence is an absolutely incredible album. Magic Hours makes my heart sing. If you like them, you might also like:

Beach House! This is my fav song from off their album Devotion. Their slightly less instrumented and more ambience.

Both good bands. I find Beach House to be a little dull, especially on their latest album, but occasionally they're like perfect. Like over my morning coffee or playing them as I'm falling asleep. A few years ago or whenever I first heard Gila, I thought it was like the greatest new song I had listened to all that month but then I got Crystal Castles's first album and those crafty devils seduced me with their arcade bloops and I couldn't help but worship them for like 2 weeks casting Beach House aside. High school... I was so easily moved by anything new.

I like EITS but I wouldn't prize them as being one of the most mature, distinct or ingenius bands around. I place them among the ranks of Do Make Say Think, A Silver Mt. Zion, Mono, and other bands like that. They're all good post-rockers and EITS is sort of helping out the post rock movement but most of the compositional techniques, textural components, and rhythm patterns are all just fairly common recycled ideas used throughout the modern music scene. Do you like EITS more than other post rock bands? Maybe, I've just listened to them too much. They were my first love in terms of like instrumental post rock which is pretty bizarre... I wish I would have listened to better music in the nineties.... anyway... Ctrl + V --> Do you like EITS more than other post rock bands?

My friend got a cd of theirs a few months back and told me that I had to listen to it. I think it's good music and I might have gotten into it a few years ago, but after listening to Omar Rodriguez-Lopz and Bill Orcutt, it is difficult to listen to something so clean. Maybe when my ears stop ringing I can give them another chance.

I like both bands mentioned as well, especially Beach House (i've sort of overplayed Explosions for the rest of my life), and I actually think their newest album is their best.

Also, Daniel, if you like post-rock, Canada pretty much invented it.

Do Make Say Think (the most like Explosions In The Sky, but a lot better in my opinion)

Broken Social Scene

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Belle Orchestre
K.C Accidental
Valley Of The Giants
Apostle of Hustle

Ambient Bands that aren't as post-rock but dabble in the same concepts:

Mogwai
Sigur Ros

EDIT: And NickAdams, I pretty much agree with you. I listened to them non-stop in high school, but this was long before my mind could appreciate a lot of the music I enjoy now. Looking back, Explosions In The Sky are pretty simplistic and not all that experimental. I'm not saying that good music should be like this, but nonvocal music has to achieve some sort of interesting ambience. I'm a musician, so I'm biased, but I like more challenging listens.

Well if you're going to mention Sigur Ros you have to mention Jonsi, now that he has a solo career. I'm going to see him tomorrow night! I like beach house a helluva lot too, I'm not sick of them yet.

What about Ratatat? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64liF2VuLxI
I listen to them a lot too. Good home work music.
