"Type a few words into the search field on Google's home page and the engine automatically returns a helpful list of popular, similar searches for the words you've typed in so far -- a convenient way to find the right information.

Enter "Christianity is" and you'll find results that, while offensive, at least indicate common discussions on the Internet. Likewise, type "Judaism is" and Google suggests other, potentially offensive searches such as "Judaism is false" and "Judaism is not a race."

But type "Islam is" into the search engine and Google's auto-results pane mysteriously vanishes, leading some to conclude that Google, whose mantra is "don't be evil," is censoring its search results."

Full story here (http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/01/08/google-censoring-islam/).

There are people here with stronger intellect and opinions than myself.

I'm curious what ANYONE has to say about this.

I just did it and it didn't disappear.

I was suspicious. Fox is not exactly known for unbiased news... but when I typed in "Islam is..." all suggestions disappeared while the same did not occur with "Christianity is..." or "Judaism is..." which is indeed quite disturbing... suggesting that Google is buckling to fears of Islamic reprisals.

It probably has something to do with the scripting not directly intentional by Google.

Google's official response is that all suggestions of hate, pornography, or swear words are supposed to be filtered out by its program (It says this on their sites explanation of how the search suggestions work). You're not suppose to get suggestions about Christianity being bull**** either. It's not a matter of them intentionally only protecting the interest of Islamic users, but that their program has failed to filter out offensive stuff about Christianity.

Edit: As an example both "Christians are" and "Muslims are" goes blank because the system is filtering out the top ten searches which are considered offensive. Some sort of bug is allowing the "Christianity is" one to get through.

Edit2: I'd like to add that Google is probably one of the greatest beacons of liberty out there on the internet. When the US government wanted to know what people were searching for on the internet, Yahoo and Dogpile happily handed over the information. It was only Google that refused to give over its users information.

Results come up for:
"Hinduism is"
"Buddhism is"
"Christianity is"
"Judaism is"
"Atheism is"
etc.

Maybe people are dumb and confuse "Muslim" with "Islam".

I say this because when I replace "Islam is" with "Muslim is" I get the same kind of results that I do with the other religions.

Oh I re-did it with the "is". I forgot to do it before. You are right, it does do that. I don't think there is anything malicious about it.

Yucky, don't get your news from Fox. At the end of the article, it tells you that if you type in "Islam will" the results "conquer the world" and "rule Europe" pop up, but so does "die" and "be destroyed." What a crappy biased institution, I always wonder why fox news exists. Someone should push Glenn Beck down a flight of stairs.

All news is biased, especially when its primary purpose is to make money (it primarily becomes entertainment). CNN/MSNBC/Fox all do the same thing, Fox just does it more blatantly/effectively.

If Glenn Beck gets a personal reaction out of you, then Fox keeps people talking about their network/watching to see what ridiculous thing Glenn Beck will say next/etc.

If it is deliberate, then that is rather sinister, but I could understand why Google might feel it needs to cover itself. After all, the evil people who have hijacked the noble Islamic religion look for any excuse. If Kurt Westergaard can be attacked for a single cartoon five years after he drew it, then there's nothing to stop them issuing threats against a one of the West's most iconic and prominent companies, if it provides the slightest provocation...

Its sad, and unhelpful, but depressingly sensible at the moment...

Defending fox news by saying "all news is biased, whether conciously or not" is the equivalent of an outspoken racist defending his views with "well everyone is racist on some level." I've never seen MSNBC, so I'm guessing that they aren't as shove-our-lies-down-your-throat as Fox (and if you don't agree that they lie viciously and often, and you're not willing to put in your own research time, I'll be happy to post examples), but if they're calling themselves "news," and they're biased, then they should be regulated. I'm not talking about tabloids here, but NEWS (which people are actually taking seriously) has a responsability to be unbiased and fair, and if they're not, then that's called propaghanda which can have devistating consequences (for tradition's sake, let's refer to nazi Germany and the media's portrayal of Jews here).

By the way, there ARE laws against propaghanda, exactly for the reasons that I've specified. I've had to watch Fox programs before and wowee, they don't even PRETEND to be fair. Why is Fox allowed to exist in the first place?

I don't think "Judaism is not a race" is offensive... isn't that just a point (whether true or false) about the question of whether Judaism is a religion or a race?

I got the normal results. Wonder what's wrong.

Someone should push Glenn Beck down a flight of stairs.

Ok...I entered "Christianity is", and "Judaism is" but got no results at all. But when I typed "Islam is" I got some results including offensive ones, like "Islam is dying".
Does it depend on where you live?! I live in Egypt, so I use google.com.eg.
