If Hyperion[i] and The Fall of Hyperion win, should we treat them as one book or two (read them in two months)? They are together about 550 pages.

Stanislaw
04-04-2005, 04:40 PM
Well, considering they are being elected in as one book, perhaps we should treat them as such, 550 pages isn't that bad.

I'm sure you wanted to say Gut Symmetries ;)

Taliesin
04-05-2005, 01:23 PM
We suggest "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion".
It is science fiction, but far from shallow or anything like that. They are very deep and consider topics such as immortality, poetry, parently love, ecology and religion and gods. Have won the Hugo, Locus, Prix-cosmos, Seiun-Sho, Japan Hugo, British SF, SF chronicle awards (plus tFoH was a Nebula finalist).

Wow, this looks very interesting, never having seen a four-way tie.
Regardless, I still hope for Gut Symmetries by Jeanette Winterson. :)

Now that's nicely put. Anyone else agrees? :p

I would love to read some works by Henrik Ibsen; I would have to call that selection my second choice. As for Jeanette Winterson . . . well, just too many people have recommended me her works, of which I still borrow Art & Lies.

While "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion" have..

Yes, let's put all this sci-fi behind us and read some classics! I.e., I-B-S-E-N

Jay
04-20-2005, 01:46 PM
Well, Winterson's 'classed' a modern classic so if you want to play classics... I have another option for you people :D

"Hyperion" is a classic.
Well, it at least will be one.

We don't understand why people are prejudiced against sci-fi (and fantasy) and consider it shallow.
Down with prejudices!

Scheherazade
04-20-2005, 02:11 PM
We are prejudiced against neither science fiction nor fantasy but next month we would prefer to read something different. I.e., I-B-S-E-N

i just realized that i have already read Hedda Gabler in my college humanities class. right after we read madame bovary and i think we had to compare the two women. i had to read a doll's house my senior year of high school and did a critical analyze of it. both good but i will have to stick with my original vote.
