In this chapter, the doctor, Zossimov, who is a well-dressed, well-to-do man, accepts Razumikhin's visitation to his house-warming party (which was mentioned in the previous chapter); the police detective, Zamyotov, well also be present, along with the others who were invited. Zossimov, Razumikhin, and Natasya are discussing the murder of the pawn-broker and her sister. It just so happens that Razumikhin has been working (behind the scenes) to clear the name of the painter who was working in the vacant apartment next to the pawn-broker's (who was charged with the murder). It is found that the painter was found to be in possession of some of the earrings that had been pawned to the pawn-broker, which is why the police, up to that point, have suspected him. Razumikhin argued that the earrings could have very well been dropped by the actual murderer, that is, on his way out of the building, and then found by the painter. As Razumikhin completes his arguing over the painter, someone shows up at the front door, a person who, up to that point, is a stranger.
