who is actually credited with writing Beowulf? The only thing I've been able to find is who has translated various publications.

No one.

Its an anonymously written story that was passed down verbally long before it was written for the first time.

Hi, I know it took me a while to respond your question. I was looking for a book I once read, but it's been ages, so I couldn't remember the name, but finally I manage to find it. It's "The Celtic Empire: The First Millenium of Celtic History" by Peter Berresford Ellis, where the author writes that Aldfrith from Northumbria is said to be the author of Beowulf. Hope it didn't come too late.
