Having heard of Arthur Miller's death, I thought we could read one of his plays to remember him. We can either choose one for April or read it during March along with our monthly book (only those who are interested, needless to say). Please post here:

*your opinions and
*plays you might consider reading

and

*vote for when you would like read it.

Curiously enough, my father, who is a healthy age 88, and not really what one would call a big fan of literature, .... recently he read "Death of a Salesman', ... I cannot remember what he gave as his reason for doing so, but I do remember him saying he found it tedious and depressing, and he was something of a salesman himself for over 50 years, and worked with many many salesmen.... but I myself read the book in high school and saw the play on PBS public educational television, as a teenager, and was quite impressed with it.

As I think about my father, I realize that he has always been an incredible optimist (old saying: a pessimist is an optimist with on-the-job-training).... but I think his optimism was a big factor in his survival both in business and his biological longevity, so... I think it is hard for him to relate to the pessimism inherent in that excellent play.

I have read four of Miller's plays:
'Death of a Salesman'
'All My Sons'
'View from A Bridge'
'The Crucible'

'The Crucible' is by far my favorite;I found 'Salesman' too depressing;'All My Sons' too sad. 'Bridge' is very good too to show the human misery.

Good idea, Scher! Though I voted for 'Yes, in April along with our usual book,' the 'Yes, in April as the monthly book' I suggest too; either works.

I think it would be cool, I had to read some of his stuff in highschool, and it is amazing how strongly the Death of a salesman moved me. I felt a connection with that play.

The world will miss him!

Can I withdraw my vote? Pwease? I didn't realise he's suggested for April, as in Jack And Jill kinda April.

I am afraid no, Jay. But you can campaign for people to vote for other options so that April vote still goes ahead! ;)

But when :D Jack and Jill wins and we should read a Miller play as well... Not all of us can sit in a classroom Scheheradishly grinning at the test-writing students and read a book at the same time :p. Not to mention attending lectures is sometimes fun ;).

I think the earliest we can start reading the Miller play is mid March anyway as we will have the poll as well after this one. So, it might be start in March and go on into April and May, whenever we can all read as the thread will be open always. :)

Hmmm, when you put it that way... as long as it's not the April book it could be ok :p

No, actually when you go to amazon.com and type Arthur Miller, you get about 800 hits! And they are mostly books about Miller rather than by him. I googled *pays the due respect to the gods of google* and read some bios after his death and found a complete list of his works, which I posted somewhere above I think. Yes, here it is: http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc10p.htm

We will have a vote on that once this one is over;i.e., after the 18th. There doesn't seem to be a need for nominations as there are only so many plays we can choose from. Thus, I thought I should post the list and see how everyone likes it.
