I second that. Let's get a philosophy books section. It'd be a great addition. Not to mention most great works of philosophy are all public domain now.

Good idea. Something like that may take some time to construct, there being so much 'general' philosophy with its many branches, existentialism, religious, ethics, and metaphysics, to name a few.

I'm just beginning to appreciate and enjoy everything available in these forums. Adding philosophy would only make this site better. Philosophy is meant to be discussed. I say go for it.

It was a play on the word 'mental' - in one sense, used frequently in English slang it can mean 'manic'. You know like "he's mental." So, 'frantic frigging' is a synonym for 'mental masturbation'. It was meant to be a throw away line!

Who's read any 'Robert Anton Wilson'? He's a self styled 'gonzo' philosopher; a bit off the wall, but entertaining and illuminating. He's also a good intro to many philosophical concepts IMO.

Yeah, I've read the Illuminatus Trilogy as well as the Schrodinger Cat Trilogy. I also read some of his non-fiction stuff: Cosmic Trigger books and Prometheus Rising. But, to be honest, it was some time ago and I haven't read anything of his for about a decade. I think nowadays I would probably see him as a bit too fluffy for me.

Hey, I'm new here. A philosophy section would be really cool :thumbs_up , and really useful. I'm a philosophy newbie, to roughly put it. I'm just dipping my toes in since I really am not satisfied with the answers that religion provides to essential questions. I just started looking around and found a few texts to read, but I would love to be able to discuss the ambiguous stuff.

You could start with something classic like "Discourse on Method" or "The Metaphysics" but I have a feeling that those are almost too readily available. Might I suggest the brilliant "Either/Or" by Soren Kierkegaard.

can we make it something to read that can be found easy enough and post what is being read or the topic being discussed and then wait until we are done before we add another author /book/discussion topic?
Maybe not a poll for this section all that voting for books stuff it is so confusing to try and figure out what is going on.
I am having a difficult time following the reading club to know what is going on. A poll is not a discussion but I do not know where to go or when go to those either.

I don't really get your point, but the more you'll hang out, the more you'll understand. IMO, if you read any phisolopical writings/books and you found interesting topic to be disscused, just open a new thread.

I agree, this is a very good idea.But maby one could suggest that there's a part for the classics and another for modern books(by more recent philosophers or those who are still alive today).

I thought that maby it would make it easier for those who are currently studying philosophy.Considering that there are so many books and have been many philosophers over the years it seems quite natural to add some to a latter group and others to a more modern selection.Afterall, Plato is not going to have his own website is he?Or be speaking at a public symposium this year or bringing out a new philosophical book next month?Some may wish to know the university which a current (those who are still alive)philosopher is residing or teaching at or when their new book is coming out or if they are going to be speaking at a public forum soon.There are some modern philosophers who also have their own websites and have articles that have just come out this year or will be coming out in the near future;and this could help young students, especially if they are currently studying their book and that philosophers life work.

I strongly regard the great works of the Pre-Socratics to Plato to Augustine to Kant to Heidegger to be the most informative and penetrative. It can also minimize much of the pseudo-philosophy and New Age-y work filling the shelves at mega-bookstores. Something for you all to chew on.
