Penelope grows up as the only child of a very young French mother and a fairly successful artist father. The book tells her story and the three children she brings up: Spoiled Nancy, immature Noel and down-to-earth Olivia. While Nancy and Noel try to encourage their mother the last paintings (most importantly "The Sheel Seekers") of her father to get some cash to solve their own financial difficulties, Olivia believes she should decide in her own time.

The story is in told in flashbacks and from different angles but nothing could be done to salvage this feast of boredom, which seemed to be, aimed to gain over the casual reader by ticking all the right boxes. There was almost nothing surprising in the story or could not be predicted. It could be read as a quick read when one is left with no other options, I guess, but I'd still say, "Think thrice!"
