Hi

So wonderful. I started a thread. wow.

I'm reading CANDIDE these days; so I thought why not starting a thread since many people voted for it for May reading.

Many people recommended and praised this work. I'm looking forward to sharing insights and readings with you people.

I read it last month in anticipation of it winning the book club poll

It took me a little while to get my bearing in the story, only really towards the end did my head stop reeling long enough for me to figure out what was going on.
I think I would of disliked the book if it hadn't end as it did, the ending makes the satire complete. I've only really been able to appreciate Candide after reading some analysis though, it very much needs to be taken in the context it was written I think. The seven years war, the earthquake at Lisbon, and Voltaire's scorn for Leibnizian optimism - I think its well to have those things in mind before starting to read Candide.
