i have an english exam tmrw MONDAY and i need some one to help me answer these questions... plz be accurate as u can and plz answer those question correctly. thnks.(i will give a gmail email account for the person that does these questions correctly and accuratley)
1.What is the purpose of the Two Minutes Hate and Hate Week?
2.Winston and Julia first met in a natural setting, with sheltering trees, warm sunshine, birds singing, etc. How is this setting symbolic?

Orwell develops the theme that a corrupt society can destroy our humanity. In 2-3 paragraphs, describe the methods used throughout the novel to turn Winston Smith into an almost mechanical being who serves the state without question or thought. Your final two paragraphs should explain to what extent you see this happening
your society today.

who said :
."We are the dead."
."Big Brother is Watching"

*just a friendly Mod note*

Please try to keep this topic civil. If you don't have anything constructive to add, I'd suggest ignoring it.

I don't want this to turn into a flame/swearing fest again.

twfk, welcome to the forums. You may not get any constructive `help' here so please don't expect it as pleas for homework/exam topics aren't always welcomed with open arms.

I feel nice today, so....

1. Two Minutes Hate and Hate Week are to rally hate for party enemies.

2. The bird is a symbol of freedom(to sing into nothingness is the freedom). The first meeting is a symbolic motif (recurrent thematic element) that was of the dream that Winston had earlier in the book.

3.Winston said, "We're dead. Big Brother is wtching."

4.The paragraphs are for you to do.I helped enough.

KitKats with popcorn? Weird... She could start with pocorn and finish with KitKats to stay sane? :p

Scheherazade

You see, eating KitKats is an art form... You cant have it at the cinema while balancing your popcorn bucket and coke... You need to have a cup of tea and peaceful moment to cherish it all... Letting the chocolate melt in your mouth with the every sip of the tea...

OK, I KitKat break! :D

We are not very sure about this. We have always thought that the Party did all that hating thing so that people could scream out all that stress and stuff they had from all those lies and things. Are not very sure about it though.

Perhaps there should be a pirate flag, a 'Jollyroger' floating on the main forum page of this site warning of the dire consequences of leaving your homework undone and than appealing here for help. Or perhaps such fools deserve the verbal lashings meted out ....either way, I''m not sure I like 'the mod' telling us we can't lambaste such fools for their laziness and fearful desperation that would make them look here for help. It's not about being kind or mean, its about another type of lesson these people should perhaps be learning......

Didn't he also own a river in Suffolk?:)

Oh and by the way, he was never really down and out in London and Paris. He had plenty of money and could never have known poverty the way the people he wrote about did. That side of him was a bit fake.

subterranean
12-06-2004, 07:41 PM
really AP....all those story with poverty and he once washed dishes to make money was also a lie ????? :flare:......

Oh..i put so much respect to this guy...:bawling:

lol SubT, you can always have another thread ... and hope Stan won't hijack it, ahem, could try to stay on topic... if you're a good girl

Not the point Jay...true that i could make hundreds of new threads...that's not the point at all!! I counted that there were lesser hijack posts than the on-topic ones...so it wasn't suppose to be closed..
and FYI...i sent PM to logos about this, no respond from him...feels that authorities or whatever just want people to be satisfied with they have...well sure..i mean what do i expect...this thing is for free...
and now i have this apathy in me and i don't give a **** about things going on in the forum. Used to feel so great with this forum, now i feel..well... ordinary ....
oh..i should learn not to take all things seriously..

I am currently writing a paper that explores the question of how Orwell came to have such an incredible intuition of events to come. What are your thoughts on the subject? Was there a specific event in his life that caused him to distrust the government, or did this cynicism devolope over a period of time. If so, at what time during his life? Any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

atiguhya padma
12-07-2004, 05:20 AM
SubT,

Orwell would have always been looked after by his family. He was a middle class champagne socialist. BTW I recommend DJ Taylor's biog, published a couple of years ago. It's quite illuminating on the subject of the London and Paris experience, as well as the Road to Wigan Pier. And John Carey's book The Intellectuals and the Masses also talks about Orwell's experience. He doesn't take a positive line on Orwell.

subterranean
12-07-2004, 05:52 AM
So was he being pragmatic w/ poverty for the sake of his writings?
