Ernest Hemingway died in 1961 so he should be in the public domain, correct? If you can, I would like to read The Old Man and the Sea.

Unfortunately, the author must have died 50+ years ago.

Actually the 50 years thing is just a guideline. It is much more complicated and is based on publication date.
