first of all, when I say another movie, I mean to say - a really good movie that sticks to the plot.
perhaps they would have to make 3 films, just like The Lord of the Rings, if they want to make a good movie.
Now, as for the cast:
Hugh Jackman as Monte Cristo (I know he's too old, but maybe they could hire a
younger actor for the part before Edmond is imprisoned)
Mercedes - Penelope Cruise
Danglar (if this is how it's spelled) - Richard Roxburgh (Moulin Rouge)
Albert - Josh Charles (Dead Poet's Society)
now you, give me your ideas! :D

Hey!! I was thinking (before reading your post) that Hugh Jackman would be the perfect one for the Count!!

I saw Gérard Depardieu as the count. Fantastic! But if we are looking for really English speaking one, I would go for Daniel Day-Lewis. A little mysterious, dark as the count should be, looks like he has suffered a lot...

Mercédès in the French version was played by Ornella Muti, but Penelope Cruz would not be a bad choice. What about Isabella Rosselini? Maybe a little old... Or maybe Catherine Zeta Jones?

I'll keep thinking about it. Very interesting topic...

Lol! So did I!! Weird. Speaking of Jackman (and getting out of topic here for a sec) 2 of my flatmates didn't know who he was! Outrageous!!

Anyway, I've already planned a way to remedy that, as soon as I can get them to watch a couple of his films...

Daniel-Day Lewis wouldn't be too bad either...or maybe Gary Oldman?

As for Mercedes, I don't know...don't agree much with Penelope Cruz.
Hmmm...can't think of someone at the moment.

I second that!

Gary Oldman as Edmond Dantes and Daniel Day-Lewis as Fernand Mondego.

I don't like Penelope Cruz as Mercedes. I will have to come back to her. But I like Hugh Jackman as Dantes would work.

Hmm maybe we should take Matt Damon out of typecast and put him as Mondego???? Wonder how the two would be together though...hmmmm. :p I am partly joking unless anyone else thinks it's a good idea, then I'm not joking.

I third it!! I forgot about him! Good suggestion.
I can't help wanting Anthony Hopkins in it somewhere but I fear he's too old.
Would Banderas fit somewhere, provided that he can act in a dramatic fashion and also loose his accent? Shame that he would be too young for Fernand...

And Haydée I thought to be alright for someone dark like Hale Berry.

Ok I'm getting carried away here.

Ooooooh, I just thought of another actor that would also be good for the role of Monte Cristo - Gil Bellows (he played Billy in 'Ally McBeal') :D

Edmond Dantes - Adrian Grenier, I have only seen his work in Entourage so I don't know his acting competence for the tortured Monte Cristo role.

The Count of Monte Cristo - Daniel Day Lewis, I have no doubt about his acting competence.

Mercedes - Marion Cotillard(because I don't know the name of the actress I had in mind)

Albert - Ryan Gosling

Hayde - Mila Kunis, she is a princess, I don't care what anyone says.

Mondego - Someone suggested Matt Damon, somehow I think that could work.

Danglar - Brad Dourif(because I can't remember the name of that one actor who is either french or british who has really baggy eyes)

Villefort - Ralph Fiennes

I would choose Edward Norton for Count Monte Cristo. I think Edward Norton possesses all the mysteriousness that the Count does.
