For my research paper, I am studying the classic Anne of Green Gables and i am stuck on this one question :

Examine the theme 'coming of age" in Anne of green gables and explore how it is developed in the book and why it is significant to the plot.

Hello Craze200,

Welcome to LitNet. It has been well over 15 years since I read Anne of GG so you are really testing my memory here. I think the novel explores themes that are generally linked to youth (the growing up years), such as family, friendship, school...etc through core characters - Anne, Dianne, Gilbert and some of the minor characters which I can't remember now. The journey into adulthood often requires the individual to learn and come to grip with issues relating to friendship, sense of belonging, social acceptance, educational achievement and love, all of which are cleverly played out in the novel through the often hilarious plot, for example we see Anne's desire to be beautiful by coloring her hair with disastrous results, Anne and Dianne's attempt at being adults and getting themselves drunk, Anne wanting to best Gilbert at school,
Anne being teased...etc.
