Happened that the good Lord,
Barnaby, recently decreed
there’d be twenty-eight words
and only twenty-eight
we could use from now on
until the end of time,
and it was up to us to choose which.

Was pretty clear from the outset
we’d have to keep the, a and and,
from, to, please, good, bad
and thank you. "Not in my backyard,"
was proposed pretty early but got shot down,
though my, mine yours
his and hers were kept.
Are, am, is, was, were
were inevitable, which left us
just eight more!

Which would you suggest–?

This is fascinating. :) There's something kind of special about the first stanza. .

I would probably add
grass,
mother,
forest,
earth
