Its a poem about the 1916 Easter Rising that took place in Ireland.
The First Stanza is mainly about how he knoew the leaders of the rising to see, and had talked to many of them about unimportant things.
The second he is reminising about the leaders. Countess Markiewciz is mentioned first and then Padrig Pearse, and he mentions how he was a school teacher etc.
The third stanza is about the thing that united this strange group of people together. It is evident in the first line
"Hearts with one Purpose alone".
That purpose was to organise a rebellion against British occupation in Ireland and to fight for Irelands freedom.
The Fourth Stanza is about the rebellion and its out come. Was it worth their lives or were their deaths their ultimate sacrifice for their country. He even mentions the names of some of the leaders who were executed for their involvement in the rising. I think the change Yeats talks about is that the result of the 1916 rising and the execution of some of its leaders is that the country revolted into the War of independence. The terrible beauty could be the Irish freestate that resulted from the end of the war. It is a terrible beauty because the treaty if the free state resulted in dividing the country both geograpically and passionately; those that accepted the freestate and those that didnt.
It is important to note that this poem was written circa 1921. The War of Independance was just over and the the Civil war was in the early stages on birth.
