Yeah, that's what I thought I just wasn't sure if we could find enough authors for a proper poll. There probably is...

Some of you guys are nominating countries that have already been nominated. What's the point of that?

I think, it's to find out the ones that will get the most votes. And, out of all nominated, the twelve countries with most votes will be read. If there are not twelve then maybe the list will be repeated, I guess.

My nomination:

India :D
Pakistan (for Urdu writers)

No i think Scher will collect the large list of nominations and then all vote on that.

For Ireland are we going to include Ireland as a whole or separate as in Northern Ireland and R.O.Ireland?
If separate then one of my votes will be northern Ireland. Plenty of great reads from there. And New Zealand.
If not then lets say
New Zealand
Mexico

Oh wow I didn't even think of Mexico. There are a lot of countries here, it will be interesting to see what we come out with in the end. Hmmm, maybe countries won't be as bad as I thought. :D

Oh I didn't think of the South American countries. I hope someone nominates Peru. It might be interesting to read a novel by Mario Vargas Llosa.

Man do you read minds? These were the two countries I would have nominated. :p

But the problem with Urdu Literature is the very limited amount of good writing it offers in English. The only good Pakistani English writer I have read has been Bapsi Sidhwa. There are many amazing works in Urdu but not many people understand it sadly. And as far as I can see, most of the Urdu works are not translated in English.

Now, what should I nominate? Russia has already been nominated. So has been Ireland (which would have been my third and fourth choices). Maybe Persia and Turkey? I have read a little bit of translated poetry and some short stories from both countries and I liked some of them. (Rumi's poetry can be really interesting!) but I don't know anything about prose really...well except some short stories as I have mentioned before.

I hope members are motivated to read a lot of the unfamiliar authors, that we are bound to come across. This can be an enriching experience for all who participates. We have the opportunity to read works with members who could give valuable references to the culture.

I was considering both but wasn't sure if there were any/enough translations.

Pensive> By Persia, you mean today's Iran, right? (Persian is spoken in Afganistan, too :))

Yes, I meant Iran of the modern day. It was known as Persia in ancient times. Actually, there was a time when Persian was quite prevalent in Indian subcontinent as well...but Persian is a language and so it can be spoken anywhere even though it originated from the present Iran while Persia (Iran) is a country.
