Just finished reading Huck Finn (for the third time) in a continuting education class. This time I was swept away by all of the different layers that that had escaped me before. The strongest realization was that it is a dramatization of Rousseau's philosophy. I see that now, very clearly. Another discovery was the biblical story line. I think it may imply that Jim was a Christ figure. Has anyone else seen the novel in this way? I know that Twain was not a religious man but the implications of this interpretation fascinate me. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes, Jim was indeed the christian character of the novel. He himself cared for Huck, whom was in reality at the time, his superior. However, Jim still loved the boy and took on the role of his father. Because his birth father was such a scoundral, Huck took a liking to Jim. In addition, Jim was honest and noble in his desires, to free his own family.

Congratulations on making it through this story three times.
