I am taking my first literature class in my life, and now I'm stuck with one of my assignements. I need to write an essay to analyze this poem. Yet, I don't understand this poem too well. Please help me.
The poem is "Hope", by Emily Dickinson.
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
My questions are the following...
+ What are the major effects of this poem?
+ How the poet achieved these effects?
+ What are poetic elements of this poem?
+ What does the poem make you see, hear and feel?
+ What is the poem's form? Is it a open or closed one? Does the poet conform exactly to the conventions, or does she play with them? how does the poet give shape to it?
+ Are there stanzas or other kinds of divisions? How does each stanza or section function?
+ Are lines choppy, flowing, and filled with monosyllables? Or polysyllables? Does the poet break lines in unexpected places?
Also, can someone please suggest me how start to write an poem with a similar style/manner and voice like this poem? What topic should I use?
