I thought this was interesting--for people who lived before the invention of photography, portraits, paintings, drawings, etc. are the only record of what they looked like, but they're often contested.

"Painted by British artist Ozias Humphry, the 18th-century portrait depicts a young woman clothed in a long, white dress and carrying a parasol. Henry Rice, a distant descendant of Austen, put the painting up for sale.
Doubts about the painting's authenticity has dogged the work for decades. In 1948, a leading Austen scholar in the U.K. rejected the portrait, saying the style of women's dress does not match the date."
