I've been doing one question for ages and I don't seem to be getting and closer to finishing it...Every time he brags about his patroness Lady C. and being invited to eat there, and what great attention she pays to him, and how grand her breakfast parlor is, it's all vanity.

He's trying to make himself seem more important because of his association with someone rich and important.

vanity: Excessive pride in one's appearance or accomplishments
