There is a line in 1984 in chapter five that goes:

'... he knew that Syme despised him and slightly disliked him...'

When I first read that line many years ago I thought it was merely an error in the edition I owned. Yet I have found it in other editions. Is this an English idiom or an error or what? Anyone?

You know, I've been wondering that for a while now. Jeez, now you got me thinking about it... Let me know if you figure anything out.

Despise actually means to look down upon someone or to feel that a person is worthless. Dislike is simply an aversion to that person. ;)
